History
The 1970 Mercedes-Benz 280 SE, part of the W108 series, was a masterpiece of Paul Bracq’s timeless design, blending classic elegance with modern engineering. The W108’s sleek, stately silhouette, with its clean body lines, upright grille, and subtle chrome accents, established a luxurious yet understated presence. Unlike the rounded designs of the 1950s, Bracq introduced a more squared-off, elongated shape, giving the car a refined, executive look that became a blueprint for future Mercedes-Benz sedans.
The interior was meticulously crafted, featuring wood veneer trim, hand-stitched leather or velour upholstery, and a refined dashboard layout. One notable feature was the hydropneumatic compensating spring in the rear suspension, ensuring a level ride regardless of load—an early precursor to modern adaptive suspensions. The 280 SE also introduced safety innovations, including crumple zones, padded dashboards, and retractable seat belts, reinforcing Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to passenger protection.
