History
The 2002 Mercedes-Benz S600, part of the W220 S-Class, was the flagship luxury sedan of its time, combining elegance, cutting-edge technology, and V12 power. Designed under Steve Mattin, the W220 introduced a smoother, more aerodynamic shape compared to its predecessor (the W140), with curved body lines, a refined grille, and a more sculpted rear end. Though slightly smaller than the W140, it was more advanced and lighter, thanks to extensive use of aluminum and composite materials.
Under the hood, the S600 was powered by a 5.8L M137 V12 engine, producing 362 horsepower and 530 Nm (391 lb-ft) of torque, paired with a 5-speed automatic transmission. This provided effortless acceleration, allowing the car to reach 0-60 mph in under 6 seconds, making it one of the most powerful luxury sedans of the early 2000s. The AIRMATIC adaptive air suspension and Active Body Control (ABC) ensured a smooth, composed ride, adapting in real-time to road conditions.
Inside, the S600 offered an opulent cabin, featuring hand-stitched leather, fine wood veneer, and advanced technology like COMAND infotainment, voice control, and a premium Bose sound system. It was one of the first cars to introduce Distronic adaptive cruise control, a precursor to modern autonomous driving aids. Other luxury features included heated and ventilated multi-contour seats, soft-close doors, and rear passenger entertainment systems.
