History
Designed under Bill Mitchell, the Eldorado’s sleek, razor-edged styling was inspired by the Rolls-Royce and the grand touring cars of Europe, featuring a long hood, hidden headlights, and a sharply sculpted rear end. Unlike most Cadillacs of the time, the Eldorado had a distinctive, sportier identity, aimed at competing with the Ford Thunderbird and Buick Riviera in the growing personal luxury coupe segment. One of its standout features was the variable-ratio power steering, which improved maneuverability, making this large coupe surprisingly agile.
An interesting fact about the 1968 Eldorado is that Elvis Presley owned one, painted in a custom shade of white and loaded with gold accents, making it one of the most famous celebrity Cadillacs. This model year also saw the introduction of optional front-disc brakes, significantly improving stopping power for a car of its size. The 1968 Eldorado remains a landmark in Cadillac’s history, merging high-performance engineering with luxury, paving the way for the evolution of the personal luxury coupe.
